Biking & Hiking

Stissing Mountain

20 minutes from downtown Millerton on the southern edge of Pine Plaines, the two mile hike up Stissing Mountain to the fire tower offers spectactular views of the surrounding area. There are two trails to the top, a short one which is very challenging, and a longer one which is more gradual as it was the Jeep road for the fire watchers.

Harlem Valley Rail Trail

From the northern trail head in downtown Millerton, the 16 mile paved trail wanders south through eastern Dutchess County to the Wassaic Metro North Station. Parking available on South Center Street.

Day Trips

Hillrock Distillery

One of the few “field-to-glass” whiskey producers in the world and the first USA distillery since before Prohibition to floor malt and hand craft whiskey on site from estate grown grain. Tours and tastings available.

Appalacian Trail

20 minutes east from downtown Millerton pick up a 10 mile point-to-point mountainous section of the Appalacian trail in Salisbury, CT.

Innesfree Gardens

20 minutes south of Millerton on Route 44, Innnisfree Gardens has been called one of the “world’s ten best gardens.”  The work of landscape architect Lester Collins, the gardens merge the essence of Modernist and Romantic ideas with traditional Chinese and Japanese garden design principles. The garden evolved through subtle handling of the site and the slow manipulation of its ecology.

Millerton’s Farmers’ Market

Local farmers, bakers and food artisans. Held 10 am – 2 pm every Saturday, May – December, every 2nd & 4th Saturday, January – April. Location – Millerton Methodist Church, Corner of Dutchess Avenue and Main Street.

Rudd Pond

10 minutes north of Millerton, Rudd Pond has good access and is part of Taconic State Park land. Fishing is allowed with a permit and the pond is good for catching largemouth bass, chain pickerel and panfish.

26 historic sites within the 6 square blocks of downtown Millerton. Pick up brochure produced by the North East Historical Society at Oblong Books, Harney’s Tea, The Irondale Schoolhouse, or Irving Farm Coffee House.
